AIRE British Champions at Sprint and Middle

Carey Martin wins W60 at Middle and Evie Conway W18 at Sprint

Mon 16 Sep

This weekend saw the British Championships take place in the Sprint and Middle Formats.

The Sprint races were held on Saturday at Loughborough in the University campus with morning qualifying heats for afternoon finals.

Evie Conway took the title in W18 by 4 seconds. Alice Leake was runner up in Womens Open and David Alcock 3rd in M40 also made the podium. Well done to Steve Webb, Robert Gatenby, Natasha Conway, Joyce Marshall and Gill Adams who also qualified through to their A finals.

Sunday saw the Middle held at Chinley an open moorland with little undergrowth incorporating a very detailed quarry area. Carey Martin had a clear win in W60. Evie had another very good run for 2nd in W18. Tony Thornley was 2nd in M70 and Joyce Marshall 3rd in W55 .

Leeds Race Results Update

Explanation of voided legs on courses 1-4 and subsequent reinstatement of legs on course 2 and 4

Thu 12 Sep

During the event I was informed that several competitors had reported that a workman at the barrier near control 197 was letting some competitors running south to north (i.e. on courses 1 or 3) through the barrier. This would have given a considerable time advantage to these competitors. In view of these reports it was decided on the day to remove all legs where the passage was the most obvious route to or from control 197. This affected courses 1-4.

Post race analysis of the provisional results shows that on courses 2 and 4 there are no split times on the leg from control 197 that would suggest competitors were going through the barrier in a north south direction and so in the light of no evidence that the problem affected the outcome on courses 2 and 4 the leg has been reinstated. The results will be republished to include the leg.

The voiding of the leg on courses 1 and 3 stands.

Aire Club League 2019/2020

Lister Park Launches League

Tue 13 Aug

The park sprint at Lister Park next Tuesday is the first counting event in the 2019/2020 Aire Club League. This year the format of the league has been altered slightly to include Urban and Park Sprint events as well as the normal Middle and Standard distance terrain events. Thirteen Regional events between now and next May have been chosen for the League hosted by ourselves or near neighbours CLARO and EPOC. The best 5 scores count.

To help you follow the League more easily we have included a new " Leagues " tab in the homepage banner.

Lister Park being short courses and parkland provides a great opportunity to post a good early score.

Overall Wins for Laura and Jack

Mon 5 Aug

Over 40 Aire members joined circa 2500 competitors at the Bi Annual Scottish 6 Day centred on Creiff. One of the best Scottish 6 Days yet – there was a huge variety of different terrain types in both forest and moorland, two areas totally new to orienteering and different race formats (two Middle Distance).

There were a number of notable Aire performances including overall wins for Laura King in W20L (including wins on individual days 2,4&6) and Jack Cooper in M35S.(wins days 2,5&6)

Peter Haines was 2nd overall on M65L (win on day 5) (first Brit a Norwegian beating him by a single point) Tony Thornley 2nd on M70L (win on day 6) Wendy Carlyle 2nd on W60S (win on day 6). Carey Martin was 3rd overall on W60L (wins days 3&5).

There will be a fuller article in the next Aire Affairs.
