JK Weekend

Evie Conway wins W18 Elite

Wed 24 Apr

Easter weekend saw over 30 club members running at the annual JK Orienteering Festival. The event consisted of a sprint race at Aldershot Garrison, followed by middle and long distance individual races at Windmill Hill and Cold Ash respectively and the final race being a relay at Minley.

There were some great results for Aire members over the weekend, with star performance being Evie Conway who won W18E overall with two 2nd place finishes on the day in both the middle and long.

Peter Haines was second overall in M65 but first Brit (beaten by former World Champs medallist Sigurd Daehli of Norway) with 3rd and 2nd places on the days....

Long Leg Madness

Compass Cup Heat - Bampton Common

Long leg madness...

Mon 18 Mar

Well done to all Airienteers who represented the club on Sunday. Great effort particularly from the Juniors to travel all that way and help the club. We were blessed with amazing conditions, compared with the forecast 24hrs before. Many thanks to Border Liners for a well run enjoyable event. Great new area and hopefully we will get a chance to race there again in the future.

It was very close, unratified results are WCOC 2450 AIRE 2418 MDOC 1836 LOC 1435; unfortunately too many Airienteers lost the plot on the long leg (3 out 3 in our car) . I'm sure this will be fully dissected and analysed in the next Aire Affairs. We live and learn, next topic for AIRE training: How to survive and conquer 'long legs'?

Runs of the day go to: Tony Thonley (1st VSG) who used all his nous to beat the gorse bushes and younger whipets; Evie Conway (1st SG) who won by exactly 1 minute over WCOC and Alasdair McLeod (1st Br) who won by 1 second!

Northern Championships Weekend

Mon 11 Mar

This weekend saw SYO host a double header terrain and urban events for the Northern Championship.

Wharncliffe North, a steep mixed woodland and moor with lots of rock features and old quarrying areas provided a true physical and navigational test in wet and wintry weather. Congratulations to Tony Thornley who won M70. Other notable Aire performances came from Sue Stevens 2nd in W65, David Alcock 2nd in M40, Tim Patterson 3rd in M35 and Jack Beavers 3rd in M12B.

The Urban event was held at Ponderosa in Sheffield with the best Aire results being Anne Maguire 2nd on the Women's Open course and Sue Stevens 3rd on WUV.

50th Anniversary Club Giraffes

Must have club accessory has arrived

Tue 5 Mar

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the club it was decided that a free specially designed limited edition Giraffe would be available to all current club members. Hopefully most of you who attended on Sunday will have picked up your head/neck wear. Alice and Sarah are pictured at the event wearing theirs and many others can be seen sporting them in Wendy's event photos.

For anybody who wasn't at Ilkley on Sunday (or who didn't manage to pick one up) don't fret I will be taking them to Northern Champs weekend events in Sheffield, Compass Sport Cup and to the Spring Sprint League evenings. Hopefully this will enable everybody to get their Giraffe.
