CSC @ Timble

Bad news: pipped at the post; good news…..

Sun 5 Jun

Despite a top turnout, AIRE were just beaten by SYO in the CSC qualifying round at Timble. We scored 2368 against SYO's 2425. We were well clear of WCOC, CLOK and EBOR. Peter H was our only course winner, but we had many top tens. We will probably make the final….

King of the W18s

Laura wins at JK

Tue 12 Apr

Laura King overcame a 4 min deficit to take the W18E title at the JK by a mere 7 seconds. Lucy Haines was third, just over a minute behind.

Laura's triumph comes on the back of some excellent runs this year. At Kilnsey, she was pretty consistent throughout whilst her nearest rival, Pippa Dakin, made a couple of errors in the middle of the course. Well done to Laura and Lucy.

Classic orienteering at Holme Fell

Fri 8 Apr

The rare challenge of having to interpret the brown lines on the map led to many mistakes. Parallel errors - mistaking one feature for another similar feature - were easily made. Clear attack points, augmented by good map reading and checking direction were the order of the day.

Kelly courses praised

Fri 1 Apr

Andrew Kelly's hard work planning Kilnsey Day 3 courses paid off. Despite the extremes of the weather, competitors were complimentary about the challenge of the open limestone terrain. Most found it a good contrast to the rough Wass forest on Day 2.

Thanks also to all the AIRE members who helped to make the JK a success. Especially on Day 3 the stiles team, and the gallant band who collected controls in torrential hail at the end of the day. We don't have to do it again for another ten years or so!
