45 year old knowledge pays off
Ilkley’s Tony Thornley and Peter Haines rolled back the years on Saturday. At the Southern Night Orienteering Champs near Guildford Tony won his age class by a clear 8 minutes whilst Peter came third in his class. The terrain was soft and brackeny southern common, very different from the tough hills and heather in Yorkshire.
The Southern Championships the following day were held at the beautiful Devil’s Punchbowl near Hindhead. Tony last ran here in an international 45 years ago! He improved on his twelfth place in 1973 to win his class by a minute. His course was tricky and challenging, with some steep climbs and, in places, some unforgiving undergrowth.
British Sprint and Middle Champs 2017
Excellent AIRE results for those who made the trip down South.
Best results were Evie Conway's second place in both Middle and Sprint, and Tony Carlyle's second in the Middle.
Top 10s in the Sprint A finals for David Alcock, Maurice Calvert, Natasha Conway. And Leon Foster was 15th in the Open A Final. Well done also to JDO Simon Martland for his 2nd place.
Top 10s in the MIddle for Neil Conway, David Williams, Wendy Carlyle.
Dales Weekend
A great weekend's competition. Thanks to all helpers. And all participants except the one (or more?) who did the damage shown and failed to report it. Cost us to repair it, and unknown reputational cost with farmers and landowner.
Beckett Park 25th March
Top organisation and courses.
Beautiful weather (Liz you have the magic touch).
Excellent junior and coaching opportunities.
Rather too few kids, but good practice for the summer leagues.
Tremendous support from many AIRE volunteers - thank you all very much.
Ilkley Moor: long legs and mud
Sunday presented a few challenges: lunchtime drizzle=mud; route to the far start long and complex.
But not as long and complex as the courses.
AIRE runners who overcame all this were led by club sec David Alcock (1st Brown) and Jack Cooper (2nd Blue).
Over 30 AIRE helpers made the event possible - many thanks to all of you.
Airienteers make their mark at British Night & Northern Champs Weekend!
There was a good turnout of Airienteers in the Lake District for the British Night and Northern Champs last weekend. Congratulations to Laura King for becoming the W18 Night Champion and to Lucy Haines, whose third place in W18 gave her the Northern Championship crown. A number of Airienteers had top five placings.
