We hope all had a good day today especially our visiting scout groups. It was really hectic at first and we thank you for your patience while the download and map issue team tried to get to grips with the number of team changes. We had all the maps and dibbers ready for teams but because there were so many changes we could not keep up and process them so some of the names of the team members will not be accurate. However most of you should be able to recognise which team you were in and see how you did. We hope that we see some of you in future events. Our next introductory event is in Temple Newsam on May 16th where you can turn up and have another go.
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. Parents are expected to shadow young and/or inexperienced children.
Parking is available along Park Avenue or in the Roundhay Park Car parks (note there is now a charge to park). The closest car park is the one adjacent to the Lakeside Café.
We will be located close to the Lakeside car park, Roundhay Park, Roundhay, Leeds LS8 2JL
Note charges Apply
Bus services : 12, 2,3, 3A, 13, 13A. make public transport to Roundhay Park easy with a short walk of circa 500m from different service routes.
At the venue look for the Airienteers banner and tent.
We will be located just north of the Lakeside café car park. You should be able to see the Airienteers feather and green tent. This is a joint event with the Wetherby & District Scouts. If you are part of the Scouts group, there will be a Scout tent & Scout leaders on hand for further instruction. For non-scout participants, please come to the Aire tent to register & hire your dibber.
We will be ready to welcome you from 12 noon.
When you register you will receive a “dibber”, an electronic timing chip which you need to start and finish, and you need to "punch" at each control you visit. You will have the opportunity to look at a map before you start, and an AIRE coach will be on hand to assist by talking you through what to do and answering any questions. The course start will be close by and signed.
You will receive the map for your course at the start. You will start at intervals, under the control of the start marshal. You can then complete the course in your own time.
You can start at any time up to 13:30pm. We will close the courses at 3pm.
Scout entries are being coordinated by the scouts. For non-scouts, entries are £1 for each person for their first course. After that that there is no charge for running more courses.
For youngest competitors we provide three short (1km - 1.6km) courses. Do one and we tend to find a lot of people end up doing all 3!
For adult beginners, older children and those that have attended earlier events in the series there will be 2 Medium courses (around 2.5km) and a longer course (3.5km). The longer course would be ideal for someone who has been orienteering before and has a “Park Runner” type background.
No courses leave the park.
Roundhay Park is a large area of mainly open parkland with small copses and some individual trees. There is an area of open runnable woodland at the northern end of the park and three are 2 significant lakes. It is well used at all times by local people, including some cyclists. Competitors should treat other park users with courtesy and give way to other park users while running.
There are paths around the periphery of each of the lakes but there is no reason for competitors to approach the water on any of courses.
The shorter courses use the open parkland areas. The medium and long courses have some controls in the wooded area.
Dogs on a short lead please. Please clear up any mess.
