Lister Park - Bradford Grammar pupils help beat the record.

For World Orienteering Day all Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in a global Guinness World Record attempt to get the most people orienteering in one day with an aim of 250,000. 224 of of our pupils took part in the mass start orienteering race in Lister Park.

It was a great success and the school helped to attain a new world record with 252,927 participants taking part worldwide.

World Orienteering Day spread awareness of this challenging sport all over the world, showing its educational benefits and increasing the visibility and accessibility of orienteering to young people.

David Alcock, BGS Geography teacher, said:

“I am really proud that the pupils enjoyed the event so much – it was a fantastic sight to see them all run off in different directions at the start and to see them zig-zag around the park on such a beautiful morning.

It was brilliant to see some of the regular club members complete the course in under half an hour and to see total newcomers test their navigation skills too.  Many pupils have asked if they can do it again and I am pleased that we will be doing so in May 2017 – but in the meantime, all are welcome to the weekly club sessions and to compete for the school too.”

The next World Orienteering Day will take place on 24 May 2017 and the school already has plans to take part.
