AIRE's Northern Champions
Peter and Tony triumph through boulders and over heather
Peter Haines (M65) and Tony Thornley (M75) both became Northern Champions at Burbage. Overcoming very physical courses, they both posted excellent results.
A cold, exposed and pretty brutal moor near Hathersage held no fears for Tony and Peter. Peter made short work of the heather despite his age. Tony found it rather harder going but was still a clear winner in his class. Joe Woodley, ex-AIRE, had a notable win in M21E. The planning came in for some criticism. Apart from an intricate, interesting boulder area beneath Burbage edge, most of the orienteering was in heathery and/or tussocky moorland, with some miserably hidden controls. This was sad as SYO did a good job otherwise in organising a major event. Well done to all AIRE participants who took part.
