Lakes coaching weekend

Last edited: Sun 2 Oct 2016

Over 20 AIRE members enjoyed a day of coaching in tricky Lakes woodland followed by a moorland event. The weather was kind and the coaching excellent.

Exercises included two route choice courses in challenging terrain, a compass course and some relocation tests. Most of these were done in pairs, with commentary by the lead runner and analysis by the follower.

What did we learn? Most people are careless about taking bearings, and many don't check the compass often enough. Al found that he needed glasses to read the map properly. Chris found that relocation is quite hard if you have run off the map.

We spent the night at the YMCA beside Lake Windermere, with a micro-orienteering challenge and an even harder quiz set by David Alcock.

We hope to repeat this package next year when we hope even more members will come.
