Danefield, Chevin Forest Park
Thanks to all you spooks for turning out to support Vampire-O. It was great to see so many youngsters out after dark, all-dressed-up and up-to-no-good. Your time-keeping was excellent with relatively few incurring penalties for late returns. No-one managed to swoop all 180 points (24 controls) – which is just how a score event should be.
Many thanks to Katherine Hill, Nick Jones, Ian Marshall and Lindsey King for helping on the night. We were concerned for two teenagers who had not returned. Having ‘misplaced themselves’ and being without a mobile phone, they did the right thing and stayed-put awaiting rescue. Particular thanks to the search party who bravely ventured back out into the scary woods. The two youngsters were found to be in ‘good spirits’ and were returned safely to base 35 minutes after time.
We try and keep Vampire-O as simple and informal as possible – it’s a fun event after all – the basic requirement is a clearing in the woods! With increasing numbers – which is great to see! – the event registration can feel the strain. Next year we will try to streamline this without involving computers and other such nonsense. Also, it is plenty dark enough to start the event an hour earlier which would help the younger ones. So, do come back next year – if you dare!
Laura and Lucy say ‘thanks’ for supporting their bun-stall in aid of the Yorkshire & Humber Junior Orienteering Squad. As ever, thanks to all those members of Airienteers working in the background to ensure a full and varied programme of orienteering events in Airedale and Wharfedale.
