PLANNER’S COMMENTS – Tom Crowther

It’s always good to go into a new area and the addition of the golf course certainly adds a new dimension to Temple Newsam.  Although not a technically difficult area it certainly provides variety for the longer courses.  I tried to alternate between fast running in the open and the need for caution in the woodlands.  As I expected, the long legs on the medium and long courses gave scope for both route choice and error.  The small woodland adjacent to the start and finish has a well defined path network making it ideal for the shorter courses.  Though I must admit it looked much easier when I planned the courses in mid September before the leaves had fallen, than it did when I was collecting controls with a fading torch after the event.

CONTROLLER/ORGANISER’S COMMENTS – Martyn Broadest

By ‘eck it were cold!  Sat on the finish for two hours I was glad of the steady supply of hot soup that Sandy kept providing.  I understand it went down well with you the competitors as well, and the golf course caught more than a few of you out!  Tom’s planning needed no controlling, and Lisa and I spent a pleasant afternoon in the sunshine exploring the golf course.  My only comment to him as I remember, was concerning the proximity of the two depression controls on the medium and long, so close to the housing estate beyond the golf course.  I think Tom thought I was exaggerating when I warned about the night-time activities of some of the local residents.  From what some of you finishing told me, my predictions weren’t inaccurate, although thankfully no vandalism occurred.  And it was pleasant to engage with some of the other visitors to the park, who appeared to enjoy bouncing across the car park at breakneck speed, notwithstanding the deep ruts and puddles.  Thanks to Lisa, Henk, Sandy and Jeff for their help, and to you all for coming along.
