College Comments and Notices

Claro’s first full event with e-punching appears to
have gone reasonably smoothly. Chris
Dicken’s courses, which made excellent use of a good but confined area,
attracted many favourable comments, as did the pre-marked maps.
It never ceases to amaze me how much voluntary effort goes into even
relatively small events like this, and thanks are due to Chris, Mike and all the
helpers in providing such a good event in such wintry conditions. The
one aspect of the event that warrants additional comment is the Orange course.
40+ minutes is over long for a winning time.
As Chris and I expected, most of the challenge seems to have been around
leg 5 (control 143), but having double checked the guidelines, previous courses
etc., I remain convinced that this was a good Orange course, testing all the
skills expected at this level but not exceeding them. However, the jump from Yellow to Orange is big, bigger than
other transitions between standards, and probably needs addressing.
Certainly, shadowing my own son round Orange courses has revealed a wide
diversity of technical challenges, even though they have all satisfied Orange
criteria. It was also the most
troublesome course from a different perspective, with planning only finally
completed about a week or so beforehand due to ongoing forestry work that ruined
previous versions. Planner's Comments

Timble
was a long time coming. I first
agreed 2 years ago & then F&M took over.
My armchair planning on the old map was soon thrown away when I got to
the area and saw the two big newly fenced off areas.
The Northerly one preventing a number of East/West legs, the Southerly
one restricting options for the short courses and preventing some good finishing
legs on the longer ones. In the end I managed to get the Brown & Blue around
the N fence without distracting from the interest.
Apologies to those whose courses went through the West side where there
was considerable felling. This was
very recent – too late to change the courses, but on the whole I don’t think
it affected you too much. All my previous planning has ended with nice sunny
days for the event, not so today, so thanks to all competitors for turning up in
the miserable conditions. Thanks
also for the appreciative comments about the courses, it makes it all
worthwhile. I think all would agree that Timble is a really nice area to run on. Final
thanks also go to the guys who did the new map, Mike for his excellent
organising – some events organise themselves but this one has needed a lot of
hard work – and to Andrew for his careful controlling.
A few subtle suggestions made all the difference to earlier versions of
the courses. Organiser’s

Thanks
to Yorkshire Water and the shooting tenant Mr J Howard for access. Thanks
to all participants who did not go back to bed when they saw what a miserable
day it was. It made our efforts worthwhile and I hope you thought it worth it. Thanks
to all the helpers. This
was Claro’s first e punching event and thanks are due particularly to Tim Moon
for managing both the preparations and the actual event so thoroughly. In this
he was well supported by a number of Clarions and by colleagues from Aire who
gave much useful advice.. It was pleasing that the computer power supply was
from batteries rather than a noisy generator. Finally,
a comment about the car parking. Unfortunately our car-parking field was
waterlogged and we had to revert to roadside parking at the last minute.
The parking team did its best to organise this to minimise inconvenience
to other road users. The gaps that were left were intended to help vehicles pass.
It was a pity that some orienteers chose to park in them to save
themselves a bit of a walk. Found
