My eternal thanks are due to Huddersfield University for allowing this event to proceed. After being deprived of action for so long, and judging by the level of enquiries we geared up for a big turnout. In the event we had about 300 through the finish, still more than we could reasonably expect for an event which was originally intended to use up leftover maps from the British Schools Championships (BSOC). I heard lots of positive comments and the general consensus seemed to be that people were grateful for the opportunity to be out and off road again. My thanks to the EPOC team of helpers, and of course the University.

Controller’s Comments

The planning and controlling was effectively carried out six months ago by Rod Shaw & Tony Carlyle for the BSOC. Nothing at all was changed so all I had to do was get round the controls in the morning to check they were all there - but they weren’t. Somebody late the previous evening had moved about five controls but they were all replaced in just in time for the start.

We thought you might be interested in the winning times achieved in the Schools’ Champs and these are shown at the top of each class. Some old men were pretty horrified to see they were slower, sometimes much slower, than a BSOC winner interpreting, for example, a G8 as an eight year old girl. The B & G do refer to boys and girls classes but the age refers to school year age group. So a G8 is a girl in what the older generation would have known as 2^nd year secondary school ( I think). That might give the old men a bit of comfort.

We were anxious to get this event off the ground to make use of the extensive strimming we had carried out for the SC to get the brambles down on likely routes. The strimmed areas were still pretty runnable so if you went into brambly areas you were way off route. Quite a few people mispunched so you may be able to work out where you went wrong by referring to the all controls map on the back of these results.

Apologies for any mistakes in the results - we’ve struggled to read some of the cards and may well have got names wrong. If we’ve got something seriously wrong let me know and we’ll correct it on our web-site. Ian McMillan (01484 661352)

YHOA COLOUR AWARD SCHEME

On Colour Coded courses, YHOA colour awards are gained by finishing on three occasions within the top half of all starters on the course or within one and a half times the winner's time, whichever is the slower. Pairs may qualify for awards on the Yellow and Orange courses and the White award is available to anyone who has successfully completed any three courses.
