Planners Comments - Ian Hill

Middleton Woods is an awkward place to plan courses longer than 3km, being rather compact. I tried to give the Blue and Green courses as many legs as possible which kept them off the paths and I saw plenty of people out in the 'bush'. Some looked rather confused, but many were navigating confidently. The White and Yellow course runners seemed to have coped well. I think most people enjoyed their courses. We were asked about controls 190 and 199 and I can confirm that further checking showed they were still in the correct place.

There is something satisfying about witnessing an orienteering event close up. The still, silence before dawn. The morning buzz of activity - preparation, teamwork, kids, orienteering, chat. Finally, an empty carpark and nothing left but a few more footprints. Big thanks to all concerned. The front men - Guy, Jeff and Ian. The teamleaders and their willing crews. Will and helpers for meeting the insatiable demand for string courses. Shirley and Sarah for publicising the event to local fell runners and school children. The unsung backroom staff that make Airienteers click. And to you all for coming. Very pleasing to see so many locals, new faces and families enjoying the event whether as a serious race or a muddy walk with a difference. Hopefully, this event provided a link between local, mainstream orienteering and Shirley Wood's successful summer series of fun orienteering events for young school children.
