Controller's Comments Pete Jones (Aire)

From a general point of view Brimham is an excellent place for adult courses (as long as you can cope with the heather) but pretty unsuitable for everything orange and below. Derek's courses did pretty well to compensate for this, primarily by the use of large numbers of controls but even then we ended up taping some of the Orange course. The relative lack of use of the area due to foot and mouth had made a number of the smaller paths extremely indistinct, which again contributed to the difficulties. Well done to everyone on the longer courses who survived the heather. I think the Green course was probably the most suitable for Brimham - all the good bits and only a little south of the road.

I must apologise to those competitors on the Blue course. Since the original planning, although the basic outline of most courses was retained, a number of the courses, controls and control codes were changed. All master maps and control descriptions were re-done and checked. It appears that a bag containing all the control descriptions for February mixed up with the current ones and the Blue course were inadvertently issued with the wrong ones (the correct ones were issued for all other courses). I guess the correct blue ones were sitting on the back seat. By the time I became aware that this is what had happened (12.00ish) it was clearly too late to put right. As a controller this scenario had never entered my mind and has certainly never occurred in my 20+ years of controlling. In future I will be initialling and dating all descriptions and insisting my initials appear on every copy made. As a result of this, it is unfortunate that the Blue course must be formally voided so we cannot award colour standards.

....... at least it didn't snow this time !! Thank you all for coming and I hope you all enjoyed your courses despite the tough going through some off the long heather, and, for those on the Blue course, I do hope that the mix up with the descriptions didn't spoil your day too much.

Many thanks to my controller Pete Jones for all his help and advice, in particular with the shorter courses. These certainly proved trickier to plan than I first imagined they would in an area such as Brimham which has many paths in addition to the areas of rock and contour detail.

Well - we finally managed to run the Brimham event – some 9 months later than originally scheduled thanks to February’s blizzard and then F&M. This time all we had to contend with was squally rain and a string course restricted by a local, unofficial F&M restriction.

My thanks go out to the team leaders and the many helpers who managed to park all the cars and minibuses, log all the registrations, get everyone through the start and finish and then get all the results processed. It takes a large number of people to run an event like this – seemingly all I had to do, as organiser was to put up some signs and get everyone in the right place at the right time!

Thank you to all of you – and if you are a CLARO member and you didn’t volunteer to help then WHY NOT?

As anyone who has ever organised an event will know there is nearly always something that leaps out to bite you when you least expect it. This time we somehow managed to get the control description sheets mixed up between the original February planning and this event – the descriptions were correct but some of the later kite numbers had been changed due to kites going missing over the summer. Apologies to those on the Blue course whom this affected.

Finally, thanks to the nearly 500 of you who turned up from far and wide to compete in this wonderful area. In addition to being a normal CLARO colour coded event we were also hosting the North & East Yorkshire Schools' League event and a round of EBOR’s club championships so hopefully orienteering is now firmly up and running again in North Yorkshire.
