Planning in Middleton Woods was made relatively easy for me being a gentle 5 minute jog from home and so one of my training grounds. It surprised me, however, just how long it took to plan the courses in what is a very small area. The main constraints are on planning white and yellow courses at a time of year when the paths are still covered in leaves and minor paths and junctions just seem to disappear. I am sure the beautiful day helped you to enjoy the event, we need a week of really hard frost to improve some of the paths.

Thank you to the Orienteers who came to the event to compete on Hilary's courses.

This event nearly didn't happen. Airienteers had the slot to hold an event but a venue hadn't been selected nor officials appointed. With only eleven weeks to go, Martyn volunteered to organise and a week later Hilary volunteered to plan; thank you both.

Because of the limited time available Hilary and I decided to limit the courses up to Green, rather than struggle with a Blue course in the small area available.

The White and Yellow courses were the most difficult to sort out but our main concern was the path system in the wood. Due to the wet summer the leaves were bigger and juicier than normal and come autumn had covered the ground thick and evenly obliterating all the paths, both major and minor. After a number of visits the paths began to reappear but then we became aware of the mud. As it turned out, due to the cold period over the weekend, conditions underfoot were the best we had seen, but the paths were not as clear to see as we had hoped.

Hilary had a very busy week leading up to the event and it was good to hear many appreciative comments about the courses at the Finish.

The Airienteers team of helpers worked well and I appreciated their efforts; my thanks to all of them.

Those of you who know me will have probably noticed my easy going laid back approach to organising things. Orienteering events are no exception, and indeed the Airienteers system of helper teams just panders to my way of work. Therefore, I would like to thank heartily the many willing helpers, team leaders and club officials who take away much of the stress before the event.

Most things went OK on the day, I think. The al fresco finish was because we couldn't manage to erect our seemingly simple, but practically complicated, finish bubble. The timing equipment decided to have a few reliability problems, both at the start and the finish. However, despite these I can confirm that the results are entirely accurate. The problems at the finish meant that we didn't have the resources to provide on the day results. Hopefully, the rapid circulation of these results will go some way to mitigating this.

I did get the most important thing right, however - the weather. Wasn't it a glorious day. Thank you all for coming along.
