This event is linked to:
A night orienteering competition that takes place each winter, a series of events put on by each of the large clubs in the association.
As Richard and Chris are experienced officials my job as controller was relatively easy. Chris drafted an initial set of 3 courses which required only minor changes to ensure fair control sites and suitable technical difficulty in the dark plus avoiding too many common legs at the end of the medium and long courses. As a regular night orienteer I hoped I had considered well enough how the area would be in the dark as things that are blindingly obvious in daylight can become a whole new ball game at night. Looking at the results it seems that the courses were planned correctly and fairly.
Control 217 was visited by all courses but caused an issue for 4 people on the long course. We had reports of the si box missing but when checked the control and box were still there and were successfully collected at the end of the event. I suspect that these 4 people found a control in a gully some 60 metres to the SE of the re-entrant where 217 was sited and assumed as there was no si box on it that it had been stolen. Unfortunately this control had been put out in preparation for the event on Sunday but as that event had a different organiser, planner and controller, we had not been made aware that this was happening. I apologise that people would not have expected to find a control with no si unit on it and that this control may have caused confusion for some people. This a lesson learnt for future events, especially at night.
I hope you all enjoyed the event and I would like to thank Richard, Chris and all the Aire helpers for a well organised and efficient event.
