Planners Comments
I am pleased that so many of you tried the historic courses. They were a bit of an effort to do, but quite fun.
I generously spared you the joy of map corrections and having to draw in your own streams (because early photocopiers would not copy blue),.And I did make the OS map a bit easier, taking off one non-existent path and adding a new one. You can see the changes if you look carefully. Ideally I’d have had a control in some dark green but Ilkley Moor lacks suitable vegetation - I tried to compensate with some nice brambles and bracken, much to my assistant planner’s disgust.... cont.
The 70s map was fairly inaccurate - the gully control (B on the long course) is about 40 metres different on the current map.The first control on the short course - F - was an original marker borrowed from Southern Navigators. It must be over 50 years old. It’s in a rather better condition than me, but probably had less wear and tear. The other two large flags were copies kindly made by my daughter in law.
The modern courses all reflected my efforts to make ‘classic’ orienteering about route choice as well as technical navigation. I’m encouraged from a quick look at route gadget that the long legs on blue and brown have generated a lot of different options. I’m not sure about the best lines - the splits may tell you, but the straight route on the early legs to the boulder below the Cow is quite feasible and saves a fair bit of climb.
I’m sorry we were a couple of blue maps short. We had no idea how many to print and got it more or less right bar blue. Thanks to those who agreed to recycle their map. Perhaps we should have had pre-entries.
Many many thanks to all those who helped make the event run well. Especially team leaders Chris and Jo (starts), Angie and Nigel (parking), Dave (registration), David W (SI/download) and David B (string course). I’m particularly grateful to Mark, Steve and Alistair for braving the rain and collecting controls. Finally, the event would not have been possible without Roger Lott’s thoughtful improvements to my courses and control hanging and Tony Carlyle’s thorough and careful controlling, not to mention stepping in to help get the last controls in.

Pre Event Info
1969 mankind landed on the moon, James Bond was On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Airienteers was born.... Special event to celebrate 50 years of orienteering in Aire and Wharfedale. Can you tackle the historic challenge? A chance to run on O-maps from the 60s, 70s and 80s - see map right - with historic markers and punches (and planning?). Then have a rest before trying a modern course of your choice (or you can just do this if you prefer). Modern courses will be slightly shorter than usual (Brown WT 50 mins?) to allow for historic course exertions.
