Comments from the organiser, Sue Stevens, for Malham Moor
I would like to thank everyone who helped in planning the event in advance and running it on the day, and particular thanks to those who spent a lot of time and effort putting out the many stiles, without which we could not have put on the event. I would also like to thank the competitors for supporting the event, and the weather for being so good.
Apologies for the toilet queues. We had seriously underestimated the number of toilets to order as we were working on an anticipated entry of 300+ and instead had 500+.
The only incidents were related to wall and permanent stile damage. A few competitors accidentally knocked a stone or two off the wall when crossing one of our wooden stiles and kindly reported this to us, and a permanent stone stile which was in a poor state beforehand was afterwards in a state of collapse due to heavy use during the event. A much more serious issue was caused by a competitor, witnessed crossing an illegal wall, which resulted in the scene depicted here:
Many thanks to those people who reported this damage, as we were able to contact the farmer involved immediately. Luckily we don’t seem to have lost permission to use his fields again, but word will get around the other farmers in the area who might be less understanding, and the club will have to pay a hefty bill to have the wall rebuilt. Many of the drystone walls in the Dales are in a fragile state and I hope this image will remind all of us why we should not cross walls marked as un-crossable.
