Airienteers, Orienteering in Airedale and Wharfedale and Leeds and Bradford

Danefield

Otley

There are two POCs in Danefield: a starter course, especially for children with easy posts and a large scale (1:4000) map, and a harder course on a 1:7500 map. Both courses have traditional marker posts, the longer course is Maprun enabled.

Directions and Parking: Public Car Parks (free) Opposite Cheerful Chilli, East Chevin Road, Otley LS21 3DD.

Public Transport:. Bus services to/ from Otley include X84 which has stops on Leeds Road on the Northern edge of the map.

Start: The start and finish are co-located at the path leaving the north western car park just past the double gates.

Map Run: The longer permanent course can be undertaken either traditionally looking out for the permanent course marker posts or by using the Maprun F app to track, time and beep to register at each marker.

As the course was set up originally with the traditional infrastructure the paper maps refers to A to R which matches the references on the posts.

Maprun on your phone screen has to refer to numbers so 1 to 18. A =1 ,R=18 etc. There are also slight discrepancies between the map and geo location. MapRun will usually register you’ve been to a control when you are within about 10 metres of the correct location. It’s less accurate for a few controls that are in steep dense woodland (as the GPS can ‘see’ fewer satellites) and damp weather also has an effect.

Therefore for the best experience we strongly advise using the downloadable paper map. Switch on Maprun on your arrival but stow your phone so you aren’t referring to the map on your phone screen but just using the app to sound at correct location, and to track and time your run.

Important Note: Take great care if parked in the car park as when you switch on the app it may register to start. We suggest you are 100% ready to run when you switch the app on so as not to utilise any of your precious time! If you do have a false start just end your run and start again.

Start Anywhere: If you use the MapRun app, this course has Start Anywhere enabled. This means that you can start and finish at any control, not just the designated start and finish. If you do this, the designated start and finish become another checkpoint on the course worth the same points as the checkpoint at which you started. For example, if you decide to start at G, you can then collect other checkpoints including the designated start/finish site. But to register a time you have to end your run at G where you started.

This mode is great for local people who can start closer to home, people who want to use other parking facilities and for public transport users who can start closer to their arrival point.

The Longer course has traditional markers and is on the Maprun F app. On Maprun it is set up as a Score course with a 180 minute time limit. There are 17 possible checkpoints. Visit as many checkpoints as you can in the time. Each checkpoint is worth 20 points. There is a 10 point penalty for every minute or part thereof that you exceed the 180 minute time limit.

Control Descriptions are on the bottom of the maps.

Map: The maps are specialist Orienteering maps at a scales of 1:4,000 ie 1cm = 40m with 5m contour interval and 1:7500 ie 1cm =75m with 5m contour interval. If you are not familiar with Orienteering map symbols please see Orienteering Standard Map Symbols 2017

As stated above, we recommend running with the paper map and stowing your phone.

MapRun Set up: Download the app from http://maprunners.weebly.com For full details refer to our Maprun page https://www.aire.org.uk/info/maprun

Course Status Update May 2020: Post O is missing following extensive forestry work in the vicinity and is no longer on the map. Post Z is also missing. Post K is partly damaged. Post N is about 6 metres to the north of the ruined wall.

The prominent path for W is seasonal and has moved to the south by a few metres look to the edge of the clearer grassy area.

A lot of the posts are low to the ground so undergrowth particularly May - October does affect visibility.

Where to find the Danefield Longer course on the app: Open the app > Select Event > UK Folder > Aire Valley Folder > Danefield Perm Start Anywhere > Download
