AIRE Junior Women ensure win in overall Girls’ competition at JIRCs!

Last weekend saw an exciting and challenging regional squads competition in Scotland with five AIRE juniors in the YHOA squad. The Individual day took place on Cambus O’May with tough technical and physical courses, planned by Jonathan Musgrave.

Whilst other juniors struggled to stay in touch with the map, Laura King remained on course to finish in second on W18, beaten by fellow squaddie Pippa Dakin by just over two minutes, with Lucy Haines in 8th position, the YHOA women packing them in at the top in W18. Evie Conway finished in 5th place on W14, just six minutes behind the first placed Scottish athlete. Matt Hall finished in a creditable 12th place on M16. The M18 course was particularly challenging at 9.5k with 440m of climb. Several athletes were out over two hours, and several others did not finish.

Relay Day was fast and furious on Forvie Dunes, north of Aberdeen. Those juniors with dune experience were at a definite advantage and the YHOA women once again showed their strength with some excellent performances to bring the squad in to first and second places. The first placed YHOA 1 team had AIRE’s Evie Conway running with Tara Schwarze of EBOR and Pippa Dakin of SYO whilst second placed YHOA 2 saw Laura King teamed with Anika Schwarze of EBOR and Emma Van Dam of HALO. The Men’s teams finished in 5th place and Matt Hall’s team with Euan Tryner and Lucy Haines coming in 14th place.

In the girl’s competition the combined scores from the individual and relay events saw the YHOA girls finish in first place followed by Scotland and NWOA. In the overall competition both the boys’ and girls’ scores are added together, which placed YHOA in third place behind Scotland and NWOA. This was a great effort from the squad, particularly the girls, in what was a highly competitive weekend.

The JIRCs always makes for a weekend of friendship and rivalry with juniors sporting their Squad warpaint and flags, supporting each other through victories and disappointments. If you would like to see the photos, contact Wendy Carlyle.
